I LOVE K. Bromberg. I have read Colton and Rylee's story more than once. I've read all of the Driven series and simply fallen in love with her whole host of characters. All of work is 4-5 stars. This book just wasn't that for me. I've been patiently waiting for Tanner's story, since we first met him with Rylee and Colton's story. As a reporter, covering international news, I could only imagine what situations he would find himself in. While the other books in this series gave us both the H & h point of view - this book is entirely Tanner's point of view. Much of the book was Tanner's thoughts and inner dialogue. Sadly, I found myself skimming more than one page looking for conversations - interactions with other characters anything outside of his inner thoughts and demons. I am really sorry that we didn't get the chance to know Beaux better. I think the story would have felt richer / fuller if we had even the smallest glimpse into what she was thinking, feeling, going through.

I will always be one of K.Bromberg's biggest fans. I cannot wait to see what is next for Rylee and Colton. This book simply fell a little flat for me.

oh gosh, i actually feel bad writing this, but u didnt really care for this book. i love k bromberg and i love everything else she's written, but this book didn't do it for me. 1st, i found the story line and setting difficult to hold my interest. i was actually skimming through the 1st pages because i was frustrated and it was difficult to relate to bj. at about 60% through, i was able to get into it more and i appreciated the ending. i was anxously awaiting this release and have to say, i felt frustrated that i didnt love it like all the other driven books. here's hoping k's next does it for me because i generally love her writing and her books.
The setting for “Hard Beat” is in a war-torn part of the Middle East, which is somewhat of a departure for Bromberg but she uses the naturally occurring uncertainties to create a powerful love story told by war correspondent Tanner Thomas. Sparks fly when he meets Beaux Croslyn, the photo journalist that will be traveling with him. At first, they don’t particularly like each other, but working in such close proximity creates its own type of intimacy. Anyone in that type of profession would almost of necessity be something of an adrenaline junkie, and Tanner is definitely that. Beaux is secretive and reveals little of her background, habitually disappearing at night to make phone calls and to take pictures. When they get separated after an IED explosion, Tanner sets out to find her and his newsman’s dogged determination takes him on a journey of the heart. This passionate mixture of danger, secrets and romantic suspense is riveting Bromberg at her best. She’s definitely the Mistress of Sizzle!
I should probably start my review by stating have read everything K. Bromberg has put out- so I am a fangirl. I initially fell in love with her Driven series and now find my self greatly anticipating each of her books as they come out. Hard Beat was no exception. I could not wait!

Hard Beat is slightly different than most of her other books, because it's completely from the male perspective. I don't know why, but that both surprised and delighted me. It details the story of international journalist Tanner Thomas (who just happens to be the brother to Rylee Thomas- the main female character in the Driven series- but fear not- Hard Beat can be read as a stand-alone novel) and his new photojournalist Beaux "BJ" Croslyn. Tanner can't believe that WorldWide News would saddle him with a complete rookie in the middle east where they wait for stories to break. Tanner and Beaux's relationship both working and personal are tumultuous as Tanner strives to figure out just what Beaux is hiding from him while trying to keep her alive and in a war-riddled foreign country. I found myself trying to figure out what Beaux's "deal" was the whole book, likely because it was written in Tanner's point of view and not hers and soon found my self at the point of that delicious frustration that you get when you know that the truth is in the pages to come- but you just have to keep reading to find out what on earth is going on.

In my eyes, there is just something different about this book when compared to K. Bromberg's other books- and not in a bad way. I don't know if it is because the book was written entirely from Tanner's perspective or because of the gritty subject matter but I will tell you that I devoured this book in a little under 12 hours (always the sign of a great book) and it left me wanting more!
