The Gates of Zion was a pleasant surprise! I've read plenty of historical books about this time and place in history, and I found this book to be accurate throughout: not only with the facts, but also with the character's perceptions. The Thoene's round out the history into a compelling story with plots that pique the reader's interest, characters and situations one can sympathize with, and an overall sense of 1940's drama that seems like a film from that time period.I was especially impressed with the authors' accuracy of the history and geography of Jerusalem; I can tell they have at least visited the city before! I found the characters to be pretty believable as well: sort of a cross between Leon Uri's "The Exodus" and Indiana Jones personalities.
I'm very much looking forward to reading the other books in this series, and then diving into some of the other Thoene books!

This is a nicely written easy to follow story. I prefer the in depth intertwining of real history and fictional but plausible charicters found in Mitchner, Clavel and Follett but so few authors can make the commitments required to write such intellectually challenging and rewarding books. Therefore, we read stories geared toward mass audiences. Among the mass genre historical fiction this is a pleasant, light entertainibg read. I will pay for, and read, the entire series. When I return from Iraq, I will buy paperbacks and add them to my libraty.
The book is okay. I have not completely finished it, but it is well-researched. Drags a bit and is a bit wordy in places, but over all a worthwhile read. This is the second book by this author I've read.
After reading The Left Behind Series, I decided this would be the next series I read. I'm not disappointed. I've always wondered about the bitter hatred in Jerusalem and Palestine and what divided the areas. This book reveals all through characters I came t o love. Can't wait for the next ttc book.
I first read this series decades ago, and have bought and given away many print copies. Since the print ones are now rare and very expensive, I chose to get the version this time around. They're what I like most in fiction accurate history, heroic characters, thrilling stories, and full of faith.
While reading the Gates of Zion, I couldn't help comparing the fighting over Gaza today; along with the atrocities in the Middle East with Hammas and ISIS in the news today. This book helped me understand the thoughts and emotions behind the fighting. Even then, Christians were also in danger.
After reading this book, I now understand why the term "Christian" is an affront to them - even though they believe that Jesus Christ I s the Messiah. I have highlighted many passages in this book. I don't want to forget the quotes and explanations. Using the Isaiah scroll to share the Gospel was brilliant.
I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I just finished re-reading this book for an online book club that is sponsored by the authors. I had previously read this book 2 or 3 years ago, and I enjoyed it just as much this time around! The authors hooked me at the very beginning, and the non-stop action, and wonderful characters kept me engaged until the very end. A+++
I read the first series of the Thoene's book and was so interested in them I have now started on The Zion Chronicles. Once you finish one of them you wanted to read the next volume. The characters are different because so many died during World War II, however some that survived as babies are growing up now as they try to establish Israel. I don't see how anyone could be anti-sematic knowing what the Jews people went through
during the War and afterwards.
