The Postman Always Rings Twice Double Indemnity Mildred Pierce and Selected Stories Everyman Library Classics James M Cain Robert Polito Books
Tough to find a better edition of James Cain than this one. I purchased this because I didn’t want to subject my early editions to repeated readings, and this looks beautiful on the shelf next to them. The build quality of this book is solid, and the dust jacket design is clean and crisp. Don’t bother with poorly designed paperbacks, spend a couple extra bucks and get this quality edition. That said, with this book you are likely saving money based on the amount of content between the covers. This edition not only includes The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity, and Mildred Peirce, but also includes several of Captain Cain’s short stories that are no longer in print. I haven’t read all of it yet, but from what I have read, there are no typos or ink blots.
If you are not already aware, the content in these three novels will knock your socks off. James Cain is one of the punchiest authors to ever put pen to paper, and his stark writing moves quick and sharp. Every one of his books are among my favorite. Much of James Cain’s writing is done in the first person, so it adds an element of not knowing whether you can trust that the narrator is giving you the truth. These are unforgettable books that will likely make a lasting impression on any reader.

The Postman Always Rings Twice Double Indemnity Mildred Pierce and Selected Stories Everyman Library Classics James M Cain Robert Polito Books Reviews
I purchased this collection of writings by James Cain by virtue of its inclusion in Everyman’s Library list of 100 essential books. Included are The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity, Mildred Pierce and several short stories. The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity are actually novella length (100 pages), while Mildred Pierce is roughly 300 pages long.
I saw the movie version of The Postman Always Rings Twice, starring Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange many years ago, but was not familiar with the details of the story. It is an entertaining tale of murder for love and profit and the subsequent ramifications, both legal and emotional. It is well written and, at 100 pages, moves right along. Solid four star work.
Similarly, Double Indemnity also has as its subject murder, this time more related to insurance fraud, though there is certainly a romantic angle. The twists and turns in this story are more convoluted and intriguing. Again, at 100 pages there is no wasted prose and the action moves along quickly. This is an excellent novella. Five stars.
Mildred Pierce is more of a standard length novel, weighing in at about 300 pages. Following up on the much more tightly written novellas, it seemed to drag in places, but was a fine effort nonetheless. The title character is a Depression era housewife, whose husband has lost his job, his ability to support his family and apparently his interest in his wife. Mildred is left to raise her two young girls and does so impressively, by founding a successful chain of diners featuring her custom made pies. The real focus of the story is on Mildred’s relationship with her oldest daughter and the sacrifices and tribulations she faces in her never ending efforts to meet her daughter’s ever increasing expectations. Four stars.
There follows three or four short stories, a couple of which are rather good, though not exceptional. All in all, a good sampling on writing from one of the most renowned writers of the period.
What a great collection. A few things about the Everyman editions before getting on to James M. Cain. These books are great. High quality, beautiful to display, and easy to read. Some sort of sensual pleasure, of gravity in having one of these editions in hand. But I digress.
The first two novels in this collection are brilliant, fast reads. I like the change in perspective from some other Noir reads--instead of a PI trying to find the criminal, Postman and Double Indemnity focus on criminals trying to get away with a crime. This leads to great suspense and interesting character study as somewhat ordinary people do horrific things and plot and scheme as they try to avoid being caught. Postman tells the story of drifter Frank Chambers and Cora as they plot to murder Cora's husband. There's a ferocity to their relationship that's shocking at times. Cain's use of Frank as first-person narrator is brilliant and takes a good story and elevates it to a great one.
Double Indemnity follows a similar plot. Insurance agent Walter Huff falls for Phyllis Nirdlinger and helps her plan the murder of her husband. Cain worked in the insurance business and the humdrum things that go on behind the scenes are fascinating--Walter knows what they'll do to get out of paying on a policy and takes steps to ensure he and Phyllis get the money and get away with the murder. There are a number of twists, of course, and Walter and Frank are as different as Phyllis and Cora, making two similar stories drastically different in their emotional weight.
I read Mildred Pierce with minimal knowledge about what it was going to be about. I expected more murder, more cover-ups, but that's not the type of book Mildred Pierce is. It follows a woman through her Depression-era California, beginning with a divorce (which leaves her to take care of her two daughters on her own) and following her as she tries to make a living, start and grow a business, and do what's best for her children (even if her oldest daughter, Veda, is a bit of a monster). The novel follows her through relationships with men and family and through the ups-and-downs of business ownership. There's enough conflict and drama to keep the plot moving, and like the best novels, scenes that enter the reader's mind as memories just as strongly as if I'd lived them myself.
