I have now read all three in this series (The Pirate Prince, Princess and Prince Charming) set in the Regency period of the early 19th century in the mythical island kingdom of Ascencion somewhere off the coast of Italy. The Pirate Prince was the story of the king and queen, Lazar and Allegra, and I gave it 3 stars (see my rating if you want the full analysis). I liked the second one better because it was a better tale and the hero, Darius, was one to die for; I gave it 4 stars. However, with the third one, I think the same weaknesses are there as in the first and with the same issues in the storyline as with the first. And, the characters act inconsistent with the way they were originally portrayed. King Lazar actually hasn't been himself in my mind since the first book...it's like she reinvented him. I can't believe he and Allegra would indulge their son as they did...just wouldn't have happened with them as parents. In Prince Charming, we have the story of Allegra and Lazar's oldest son, Rafael de Fiore, the golden boy rake who is now 30 and tired of being the next king in waiting. When the story begins, he is still frittering his life away (as he was in book 2) with loose women and drink and friends who don't encourage him to act any differently. His father the king is taking a vacation to visit his grandchildren (the children of the Princess Serafina and Darius) in Spain and leaves Rafe in charge of the kingdom on the condition he selects one of 5 potential brides his parents have screened hoping he'll settle down. He agrees but really wants none of the 5 women. Then he meets the mysterious Masked Rider (think Robin Hood) who, it turns out, is a poor young woman with a noble ancestry who he decides to take as his bride to free himself of his father's dominance. Not a bad storyline actually.
As was typical of all the books in this series, the first half of the book moved along smoothly and I throughly enjoyed it. Then came the bizarre "rabbit out of a hat" plot twists and the inconsistencies in the characters' behaviors that characterized the rest of the book and it had me reeling. I found myself skipping dialog...never a good sign. It wasn't dull or slow moving; it was just bizarre and not believable--contrived like a soap opera. The ending was good (thank heaven for that) and all was redeemed but the part before it just lost me. Some of the specific issues: use of modern words and phrases not consistent with the time period; the heroine Dani behaves alternately as a strong, independent woman and then as a wet noodle (same as the heroines in the first two books); the minute Rafe tells Dani "never lie to me" we know she'll be caught in a lie...so predictable; Rafe goes back to his mistress determined to "wear her out" when frustrated by Dani (sign of weak character; ugh!); and no one seemed to figure out that Orlando was the spitting image of the king for a reason...duh (you'd think the really smart king and queen would have seen that one coming).
I'm giving it 3 stars as it was mostly enjoyable.

Prince Charming The Ascension Trilogy Gaelen Foley 9780449006351 Books Reviews
I absolutely love this book. Actually, I love the whole series. The love that the prince has for the Daniella is heart thumping. I wish we could all have a Prince Charming like him. If you read the 2nd book you will have a better understanding of what the Prince went through and then you will know why the last book of the series is so awesome. You actually get to see him grow up and mature as a Prince and how Daniella helps him. I have read this book 3 times. I have to read it every year. Gaelen Foley knows how to write love stories. It has intrigue, suspense and a happily ever after. Love, love, love this series!!!
[1816, Ascension] In the past five days I have read Gaelen Foley's first works - the Ascension Trilogy The Pirate Prince,Princess, and Prince Charming. I thoroughly enjoyed Foley's Knight Miscellany and was excited to read some of her earlier work, as nowadays there are rarely good historical romances that I haven't read!
I have to say that though the trilogy started off pretty well (I didn't like it as much as some of Foley's Knight books and had a few issues here and there) the series got progressively worse.
I was very excited for this book, for I love a historical romance where the hero is a devil-may-care rake who is matched with a somewhat awkward or unusual girl. In PRINCE CHARMING, Rafael is most definitely such a man and Dani is wonderful as an independent, tomboyish girl who knows her own mind. However ...
SPECIFICS
(* = kind-of-spoiler, ** = spoiler)
(1) Though the hero and heroine start off as described above, there were definite inconsistencies in both. Rafael is supposed to be a rake who cares nothing for anyone; he is selfish and immerses himself in pleasure and little else. Also, as a result of a youthful indiscretion, he does not trust easily - most especially women. Within a few days, however, he is transformed, and I found this quick turnaround hard to believe. I can see how he could be disarmed by Dani's youth, innocence, and honesty, but his suspicion is supposedly so deeply ingrained, that I don't think he would allow himself to fall so quickly and in such a manner.
*(2) Dani started off as SUCH a wonderful heroine ... and quickly deteriorated in my mind. She so easily falls for Orlando's (the evil cousin) speech when he tells her the Prince is just using her to strike at his father and etc. that I was very, very surprised. One minute she's in love with Rafe, allowing him liberties, excited about the future, and the next she is swayed by a few words from someone whom she doesn't even know and has no reason to trust! She goes from loving Rafael to deceiving him in about one minute; it made her seem immature, gullible, and far too impressionable!
(3) I think that Foley runs into a hard-to-overcome obstacle in her choice of this series ... PRINCESS and PRINCE CHARMING revolve around Serafina and Rafael, who are Allegra and Lazar's children (the hero and heroine of the first novel, THE PIRATE PRINCE. Though I won't go into PRINCESS, in regards to PRINCE CHARMING, character failings that can be blamed on the parents are, in this case, blamed on Allegra and Lazar. The reader's loyalties are torn, therefore, because two books ago we loved these two characters and were rooting for them to get together. And then you have the second and third novel where, truth be told, they are not portrayed in the best light and their children start off as selfish or wastrels who don't really achieve or do anything substantial with their lives.
*(4) Even though he doesn't go through with it, it bothered me how far Rafael did go with the other woman, Chloe, as a result of Dani's rejection and his resulting sexual frustration.
P.S. Just a general note for those of you who are not familiar with Foley's writing, she does have darker undercurrents than most historical romances, sometimes addressing such things as rape, murder (and not just for a mystery-type subplot), etc.
BOTTOM LINE
The book definitely has its highlights and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Gaelen Foley or historical romance, but I might suggest that you get it from the library instead of buying it. If experienced with Foley's writing, you may be disappointed; if you aren't, then know that she has even better books out there - some of my favorites being Lord of Fire,Lady of Desire, and Devil Takes a Bride.
